Our Story
Our story started with a need. A long time local resident had lost almost all of their furniture and belongings after a particularly bad rain storm that flooded the entirety of their home.
Without a way to pay for the clean up or the restoration of their home, a small house in a local barrio, neighbors came to help. This family was well liked and was known for preparing delicious Dominican food that they could sell on the streets and by delivery.
We decided to help out the best we could by getting then a place where they could cook, and many of us would help sell or give away samples to tourists on the beach or on the street. They began to get orders.
Realizing that they also needed a long term solution for a play to live, we got together and created a list of available homes and apartments that were both clean and affordable. This list grew quickly and before long tourists we knew began to ask about some of the available properties that were considerably less expensive that most of what they found on AirBnb, Booking dotCom and Facebook Marketplace.
We were quickly offered commissions when finding suitable clients for the property owners and we decided to continue this project while adding properties for sale to the list. We turned the commissions into the costs of publicizing the lists and also to help other neighbors in need. One example, when a local young student needed a special traditional dress for a holiday performance at her school, we gave her family the money to pay for the rental of the dress. This was a great success for us that made us proud.
From that seed has grown more ideas and short term projects:
* A Dog and Cat rescue and adoption service for local strays. Food for feeding and shelters for keeping them warm and dry.
Educational classes run by expat volunteers to teach locals English, French, and Italian.
* Subsidies to help purchase new cheaper cell phones for local single mothers and fathers.
*Crowd funding projects to help needy locals with rent, food, water and jobs.
*Funding for local home repairs of roofs, walls, and plumbing.
*Music festivals and classes for interested local children, run by expat volunteers.
Some of these projects are already in development and some are dreams. But dreams are what keep hope alive and hope is what keeps all of us alive.
We hope that you can share any of our dreams that suit you.
